Half Owner - 72 Stern drive 19'

My (83 yr. old) father owns a '72 I/O 19' Seacraft. It hasn't seen water in two years, He has been caring for his (ill) girlfriend and hasn't had time. I could never understand other peoples devotion to boating until I saw this '72 and fell in love with it. In owned a '73 Shovelhead (Harley) and know about the joys of wrenching, this '72 Seacraft needs wrenching and it will be a love/hate relationship for sure. I'm visiting my dad in Florida from New York but will be coming back every six months 'til I retire in 7 years. Currently she needs an exhaust bellows but I don't know if she is a Gen.I,II or one of the other designations. Where on the boat would I find pertinent information that will assist in ordering the correct parts. I want to do a complete restore. I ride a BMW now so my mad money can go into a boat. Thanks all.

Get the serial numbers (Block and Drive) then call the manufacturer. They should be able to help you out or take it to a descent shop and maybe they can point you in the right direction. I'm not sure if the current owner of the old Johnson/Evinrude(OMC?) line will have the records, but its worth a try.

It's a MerCruiser, I called Mercury today (1/04/10) and was told the old info was on paper & they never upgraded to the computer and that I was "Sh*t out of luck". But I will look for any numbers I can find. Once I have that info I can order from NY after I return there.

Thanks

Gonna need lotsa help

If original, the drive is a 1st generation drive. I have a friend who has had his '72 Seafari since new. It came with a 140hp Mercruiser with a Gen I drive. He repowered in the mid 80's to a 3.0L 130 hp with an early Alpha drive. I was the Dockmaster at the SeaCraft dealership where we serviced lots of these.
