Tohatsu
Anyone have an opinion or knowledge on a 98 115 Tohatsu? I am told the "compression is good in all cylinders." Don't the commercial guys use these a a lot?

Re: Tohatsu
They might be good, but parts and finding somebody to work on them is a major issue

Re: Tohatsu
Dixon is right. Very good motors, but parts availability is not so good. Many independent marine service shops work on them, though, so service can be found. It's the delay in getting parts.
For the record, though, Overton's/GanderMountain sold these under the Nissan brand for many years, and some parts are still available through Overton's like impellers, props, etc. |
Re: Tohatsu
I had a '88 model 8hp that ran flawlessly year round for 15 years. Never had to do anything to it other than normal maint. (Far from a 115, though).

Re: Tohatsu
Had a 140 Tohatsu (around that same year) that was flawless, wish they made larger HP engines! They are made by Tohatsu and some are badged as Nissan's.....more widely known name. Do a search on THT and you can find lots more info on them.

Re: Tohatsu
'98 is about the time Mercury brought in their Direct Inject Optimax to the market so it would be interesting to see if the one you're looking at is the first of the Tohatsu TLDI motors.
They are certainly the most popular motors on the west rim of the Pacific, and down under. One of my local dealers has dropped the E-TEC and now carries only the Suzukis and the Tohatsus. Didn't knock the E-tecs just wasn't getting the sales support from BRP he had once had. He still services them however. Said Suzuki and Tohatsu were always responsive to parts supply, warranty payouts, etc. He did mention that Nissan 25HP and under are re-badged Tohatsus. I have no experience with them but have only heard good things. |
Re: Tohatsu
and Merc 40 and under are supposed to be rebadger Tohatsu
