Repair Opinions Needed!
I purchased my 69 20ft SF last fall and now that the weather in New England has improved I have started working on her. I am going to list some pics of the boat and I would appreciate if you guys could let me know whether you think the picture shows concern/problems and possible ways I could repair it.
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_iEyc1B99KzE/S7...vqpTChI/s1.jpg Here is the first concern. The inside rear port gunnel has cracked/damaged. Any thoughts? http://lh3.ggpht.com/_iEyc1B99KzE/S7...0/P3210736.JPG http://lh3.ggpht.com/_iEyc1B99KzE/S7...0/P3210738.JPG In this photo you can see some poor repair work done to deck just underneath the forward storage compartment. I am assuming I can just grind this off and reglass? http://lh5.ggpht.com/_iEyc1B99KzE/S7...0/P3210733.JPG Third thing is there is a crack in the fiberglass in the transom on the port side next to the engine. Can I grind this and fill this as well? http://lh4.ggpht.com/_iEyc1B99KzE/S7...0/P3210713.JPG |
Re: Repair Opinions Needed!
Well, IMHO, it looks like the transom is weak.
Have you checked it for moisture? Both cracks are signs of stress loads, my guess would be the transom needs to be replaced, particuliarly if it is original. Can you fix the cracks, yes, but they will come RIGHT back, and they won't fix the issue. OP |
Re: Repair Opinions Needed!
The transom needs to be recored/replaced.
The stress cracks are caused by excessive flexing of the transom under strain. Without replacing the transom core, it will continue to flex, and eventually fail completely. Recore the transom. |
Re: Repair Opinions Needed!
If you had a 35HP motor on the back, I would not be concerned..!! Buttt, it looks like 200 ponies hanging
there? If it were me the transom would be replaced. See ya, Ken |
Re: Repair Opinions Needed!
I hate to agree but that crack next to the transom is pretty serious looking, after that is fixed everything else should be pretty good and cosmetic. The rest of the issues are probably caused by the transom, just MHO, I am not a boat restore expert by any means.

Re: Repair Opinions Needed!
The crack looks much bigger than it actually is since its a closeup, but I agree that its not good. I haven't checked her for moisture yet, prolly should. I have a 98 140hp Mariner 2 Stroke on the back of her, not sure of the weight. Doesn't seem like it should be too heavy considering some of you guys are hanging 175's on them. The entire hull is original...deck, transom, console, etc. Here is a pick of the stringer from that same side (port). Looks like its detaching as well? Also looks like someone tried to repair it by filling it....

Re: Repair Opinions Needed!
Mitch, it's not even a question. You really need to do the transom.

Looks and sounds like a "might as well" project to me! :D
