hynautic steering
 

Has anybody replaced the hynautic rv-60 helm unit and canister resevior with a selfcontained unit? like the seastar. I would like to leave unit that is in place on my outboard and only change the helm part if this is a possibility. If I cant do this where do you get a resealing kit for the Hynautic?

Have not done what you were planning but, I have a hynautic system that I took off my boat. If this would help send me a PM.

george - a seastar helm and lines will work fine with the hynautic ram. The only issue you will have is getting a set of seastar fittings that work with the hoses.

one note . . . if you buy a seastar helm . . . get the 1.7 cu in unit. do not get the 2.0 or 2.4 cu in helm unless you have popeye muscles.

That's correct. The way Seastar helms work, the larger the capacity, the greater the steering effort, but the less turns LTL. If you get the big pump, with lots of effort, the Power Steering pump is the way to go...at $1800 a pop.

As always a wealth of great info! Thanks Guys ! I would like to go with the seastar. I have a 250 suzuki on the back of a my 23.
I thought I would go with their pro unit (4 turns ) but you think that would be very tuff to steer and not neccesary ?

I went with a complete seastar system with the 2.0 helm and steering is very light. Now wish I gone with the 2.4 unit!

However I noticed that the piston rod isn't long enough to move the motor all the way to the stops, and all the hydraulic steering units I've looked at seem to have same problem. Motor only turns about 2/3'rds of what it's capable of. Has any one else noticed this, or do the BRP motors just have more pivot capability than other motors?

Fix would require new cast brackets and a longer rod. On my old Hynautic setup, which I designed myself using an unbalanced cylinder for an inboard model, this was not a problem. The loss in maneuverability is noticeable. I originally attributed that to the bracket/longer boat phenomenon, but am now convinced it's because motor does not pivot as far as it used to!

I've got a 2.4 helm that is going on Ebay for $200 today.
I have a 2.0 on the 23 and 1.7 on the 18. I can turn the 1.7 with one finger, 2.0 is a little stiffer, 2.4 is like rack and pinion steering on a car from the 1970's. SeaStar recommends that you use the power assist unit with the helm.

I loved the hynautic k-6 on my MA. It was the cleanest setup and seemed to have better throw than the K-10 or seastar.

I went with the seastar 2.0 pro. I got sucked in by the 4 turns lock to lock. hopefully Its not too stiff. I will report back when its done.
