Registering project boat no hull# or title?
Does anybody know how to go about registering a boat that has no Hull #? I have 20' SeaCraft project boat with no hull# or title. Trying to get this info before putting any $ into anything. Going for 20' refit #2. Already did a MasterAngler, now gonna do the Sport. Any info regarding this matter would be helpful. Thanks

Re: Registering project boat no hull# or title?
Try talking to registry. If you have previous reg # and bill of sale then you will probably be ok. If not . . . You MIGHT be able to get a FLZ number assigned to the hull if you have no previous registration.

If you have a bill of sale for the hull purchase, and receipts for repairs/improvements totaling more than the purchase price of the hull (receipts totaling at least 51% of the value), you can get a homemade vessel title in Florida. Save your receipts.
If you got the hull free, you need a letter from the giver stating that you were given the "remains" of a boat. |

Without a title and # they will register it as a Homebuilt boat not a SeaCraft. So when you sell her one day your selling a Homebuilt boat. That doesnt effect the ride but it does effect the value. I would deal with this first off. They will also need its weight from someone that can certify its weight like a weighing station as well as length.

Re: Registering project boat no hull# or title?
There's a few options but homemade vessels can be a pain in the Arse. At the Title offices' discretion you may need to provide picts or bring the boat up for their inspection to verify it is homemade. It clearly states it cannot be a prior built vessel that has been altered or modifed. Could be a tough deal. On the other hand boats made prior to 1972 did not require Hull ID #'s You could claim it is an untitled 1968 or ? and go that route. Worked for me last week on a Achilles Dingy :D
You can try to find orig owner or File a mechanics/ Storage lien and get the title that way, may take a few months but it is doable. |
Re: Registering project boat no hull# or title?
My '72 SeaCraft had no title in '01 when I got it, even though it had been last registered in CT in '79 as a SeaCraft.
I got a Florida "homemade" FLZ number, and convinced the clerk to put "SeaCraft" on the title by producing photos of the hull decal, partial serial plate under the helm, and the CT registration from '79 showing the serial # could be mine. [The decal had an indeterminate digit] My boat had been abandoned in a barn for many years before I got it. |

From experience, it can be a real pain. If "Peter" can do it for $250, it'll be some of the best $ you ever spent.

Thanks for all your input on this matter. I have a vision for this boat and I hope this speed bump doesn't slow me down that much. Huge help.

Link to Peter does not exist anymore. Anyone have a phone # or any other info that would help getting this boat titled and registered. Please help...
Want to start with this project but first things first, title and registration before a dollar goes into project. |
