johnson commercial 155

has anyone ever had any experiences, good or bad, with these motors? the guy said he just had it rebuilt and hasnt even broken it in yet. would this be too much for my 78 18ft? this might be a deal i cant pass up, but dont want a motor with alot of headaches.

What year? With or without the VRO system?

Low compression motor, they run on the worst of fuel. I forget the octane they can run on. Good smokey old motor, they were the predominant motor on the back of towboats for years. 155 I think was basically a 185, bigger lower, couple other things.

89 motor. the guy said the VRO was disabled, if it isnt and i get it, i will disable it and mix my gas. do you think this wee be too much weight for my 18? i looked it up on NADA, says it weight 400 lbs. being a low comression motor, what #s do i need to look for on a comp gauge?

I just sold a boat with a 1989 150hp Johnson "cross-fire" motor (not a looper). I've had four of these type engines and they never broke, just wore out. I thought the 88hp, 155hp commercial marketed motors were mix your oil only type engines. That way, no worry of VRO failures.

you're correct...the spl's and commercial engines,had no oil injection...

also,"low compression engines" ? it's a 2 stroke,the compession ,ratio is much less than a 4 stroke engine...that comment concerning "it's a low compression engine",it's incorrect...

They don't run a different cylinder head on those than other crossflows?

For what its worth I have a 417 pound 150 Merc on my 18 without any changes to scuppers or deck and I am fine. Hull is an 85.
