Shaft diameter

I'm trying to get myself a deal on new 13.5" Destroyer steering wheel with the knob on ebay but don't want to buy the wrong size. The boat is a 1976 23' inboard with the original teleflex steering. Anyone know the shaft size?

Dan, I believe it would be 1.25" for the shaft. Are u sure that engine wont swing a bigger wheel? More like 15"?

Cant help with the size as I have tried two separate wheel nuts on my inboard and I am 0 for 2 for fit. One of the nuts was one that I purchased off of Ebay that was listed for "mechanical" steering and it was the wrong thread.

I believe I have the original mechanical steering so the next step is getting a thread gauge and figuring it out...

Depends on what 'old' system you have, but heres a start. Grab a caliper and take a look!

It depends on the system you have. I believe all Teleflex have a 3/4 tapered shaft. Mine had a Kiekhoffer (sp) system. Mine was not a tapered shaft. In order to change the wheel, I had to change the system.

Good excuse as any....
