Pedestal seats

Does anyone know if you can take the seat off to cut down a pedestal to shorten it? Is it just a compression coupler that sleeves over the diameter of the actual pedestal.
Tough to put into words.

I cut mine down 5". When my seats come off the pedestal, it leaves a straight tube with a base crimped on. If yours has a top that's crimped on, that would make it more difficult.
