200 hp outboard on 23 Sceptre???

Enough power??? I am thinking of fuel consumption...Would engine have to work too hard to keep boat on plane?????
I would be purchasing a used Johnson 200 hp 1990's
Thanks

I had a 1982 Sceptre with a carbed 200 Yamaha. It wasn't a speed demon however it didn't run bad at all. My cruise was 30 MPH and got 2.2-2.3 MPG and it would top out at 39-40 MPH.

If you don't like it swap out the carbs for a 225.

We had a 1976 Johnson 200 and then a 1980 Evinrude 200 on our 1977 Sceptre 23 until 1988 (11 years total) and had the exact performance as above. It was very acceptable. In 1988 we opted for a Yamaha 225 Excel and the performance was increase to a 31mph cruise at 4200rpm and 42mph at WOT.

Fred, I ran an '88 Johnson 225 on my '74 Tsunami. I burned about 11-12 gph on the Navman at 24 mph cruise (about 2.0 to 2.2 mpg), WOT was about 37 mph with the motor burning 38.4 gph on the Navman (less than 1 mpg). Pushing cruise speed to 30 mph upped fuel flow to 18 gph, or about 1.7 mpg.

Jim - Was the Excel good on fuel? or on par with the OMC?

Best I can remember the Yami was a little more efficent. I still run the yami now. I ordered a fuel flow sensor (last night) to connect into my Lowrance HDS-7, so soon I will know exactly my fuel mileage etc. I'll post it up then.

The bottomline cruise numbers for a Sceptre 23 w/ a 225hp outboard should be 27-30 mph at about 10-12GPH
= 2.2 - 2.5 MPG . If you want to go faster you are going to have to pay exponentially $$ for that additional speed. Fr. Frank is right, and he must have been running a pretty loaded (lots of gear) down boat and full of fuel.

Not necessarily. My father's '82 had a '89 Rude 225 and posted the same speed #s (not sure on fuel). The '97 Yam 225 SWS on there now gets him roughly the same, except top end bumps 40.

I wasn't loaded down to get those figures so much as I was propped for max torque, not for WOT. It's the way I like to prop a boat:
Prop for Max of Max at Max. (Maximum limit of Maximum rpm range at Maximum loading)

With 3 adults and 7 teen-aged kids in the boat, full fuel and camping and fishing gear on board, I could still turn 5500-5600 rpms on that Johnson 225 Looper, but my top speed dropped to 33 mph. Lightly loaded, I could run it up to 6100 rpms on a good day. Oh yeah, I had a 110 gallon fuel tank in it.
