Twin 250's on a SF 23'?
I have a older Yamaha 250 that the shaft is stuck in the crank and I mean really stuck... have taken it to 3 differnt shops and all have given up on it. I allowed one to cut the lower unit off to get to the shaft and still no luck removing it....
On to my question; The last shop I took it to has a set of twin Yamaha 250 4 strokes that they pulled off to do a repower and they have made me a great deal on both... they want to sell them as a pair. I think read somewere that the boat is only rated for 400hp total, is that true? Would it be to much weight? To much power? Unsafe? Would you do it??? Or buy both and sell one? |

Those F250s are over 600 lbs each, probably too much weight on the transom...

Won't work - its only a 23' boat for petes sake - you only need 1 250
Since the LU is off - pull the powerhead with the shaft, then they can get at the shaft with heat better |

not fours maybe if they were 2 strokes, and it would be fast too fast 70 plus , sick.

It's not too much power, some years of the 23' were, in fact, rated for 500 total OB horsepower. It is, however, too much weight.

Re: Twin 250's on a SF 23'?
I just sold twin 225 johnsons that were on my 23. It was a blast on flat water. If it got above 3' it would beat you up. The stern would fall off the wave no matter how much I was in the tabs. I needed to add weight forward. I run 20-30 miles out on a regular basis and if it picks up I have to crawl in. Plus all that weight back there would drag you off plane under 2800rpms.

59mph at 5800 according to GPS. I ran out of lake to get her trimmed out correctly. Im sure the radar and top deceased the top end a bit.

Re: Twin 250's on a SF 23'?
Thanks for all the input! If I decide to get these I will buy both and sale one or may just keep looking for a deal a single 250. I am not to picky about age or if it's a two or four stroke as long as it has been maintained over the years. Just got divorced so funds are limited right... but I got to keep the boat!
Also like the ideal of pulling power head and crank to see if I can get the shaft out. |
