Stiff NFB Safe-T-Steer helm

The previous helm on my 20' MA was shot. I ditched it with the 175 and have a 4 stroke 100, which weighs less, but not lots less. And it is top heavy. I kept the cables.

A brand new NFB helm (I think 3 turns lock to lock) is very stiff. I can muscle it, but I feel like I might break something. The previous rotary unit sheared a tooth with the 175.

Is the 3 turn too small for a 376 lb top heavy 4 stroke?

Also, with the right hand helm, the cables come out the left (not recommended) and have to do a "S turn through the hull to get to the right hand side of the O/B to steer it. Seems like all master anglers must be like this, though. At least with the monster console.

I can't afford hydraulic now. I still have other things to fix.

Thanks!

if the steering is stiff now,and it wasn't previous:
you haven't stated if it's a new engine,or used.there's one way to find out the problem -
disconnect the engine from the steering cable - see if the engine moves side to side freely - if it moves freely - sping the helm - is it stiff ? stiff,it's the cable, replace the cable...
if the engine's tight - the bushings on the tiller arm - located at the top and bottom of the clamp/swivel assembly, these,on occasion will become tight - seawater hits these, the water evaporated, leaving the salt behind.the salt wicks moisture and prys the bushings tight - causing a stiff steering system...this is common on yamaha and merc engines - these points need to be lubed,monthly...

I put u flex hydraulic on my boat this spring for $865. Don't regret it one bit.

I just replaced my steering in my 23 sceptre with the teleflex safe-t qc and adapter kit for inboards. The only problem was the old helm shaft was square drive and new helm is 3/4 taper shaft. I just made an adapter or you can buy a new wheel.Hope this helps.

I have a NFB Safe-T and have found engine trim can have a big influence on ease of steering when running. I guess if you have difficulty when the boat is on the trailer thats not the case.

Certainly seeing the trim make a difference. Some grease and adjustment helped. Still stiff, but not awful.
