Something I did not want to know
 

Burned out a set of bearings on my trailer today. Its been maybe 40 years since I did that one, guess it was time, but there is no good excuse for leaving the spare hub in the garage. Sunday afternoon is not exactly the best time to obtain a new hub when you are stranded on the side of I-75, so I decided to find out if it could make it home minus a tire on one side. Darn if it did not work, 20 miles at around 15-20 mph( I got off the interstate quick) and home it was. Checked the side wall temperature every few miles and it stayed not much above the other side, so I guess its ok.

Questions: Does anybody know how far you can tow and how fast with a tire missing on one side and the remaining tire carrying about twice its rated weight?

If the side walls don't heat up much is the tire still good after this much abuse( radial tire)?

100 miles at 60 MPH. I didn't pull the tire, but the front axle on my tandem rusted through the day I picked it up. When I got it home, the front axle was hanging in the breeze on one side. it is a 5000lb rated trailer, so it wasn't THAT overloaded with a 20' center console on it.

I don't know Mr D, but if you were pulling the Seafari you did the right thing by taking the back roads. Glad you made it without further incident:eek:

Fishstretcher, thanks for the info. My calculation, a 20 cc, 1600lb + 400 motor+ 500 fuel, misc+ 1000 lb trailer equals 3500 lb, maybe a bit high. Tires should be rated for about 1250 lb each,,so it was about 40 percent over weight. Sound right?

Anybody know a Seacraft 23 cc that looks a lot like DonVs avatar, seen Sunday on the south end of Shell Key, north of Desoto Park in St Pete?

Sounds about right. Tires are at least 13", maybe 15", New-ish. I would have to look. But tires are about as big as you might find on a 3000lb single axle trailer.

I wouldn't recommend doing that haul if you know it. Much easier if you are unaware of the situation!
