Not a Potter

So I was originally under the impression that the 23 I just bought ( http://www.classicseacraft.com/commu...ad.php?t=23436 ) is Potter. After researching the site a bit I deciphered the HIN number and it turns out that it's a Sarasota with a twist. The twist is that my HIN# TXYF30121080 indicates the boat was made in Oct 1980. So how can that be if Sarasota did not make the boat till 86? Could have it been made by CSY and later sold by Sarasota?

Any info regarding the quality of CSY and Sarasota would be appreciated.

SEC = SeaCraft Inc (Potter 1969 thru 5/80)
CSY = Carribbean Sailing Yachts (1980-1982 23'& 27' SeaCrafts only)
SIC = SeaCraft Industries Corp (1980 thru 1987 other SeaCraft Models) (Potter on Board of Directors approx 1 year after sale)
TXY = Sarasota Marine Corp ('86-'88 CSY Parent Co)
SIC = Tracker SeaCraft of Fla (1987 thru 1990) all models
SXC = Stern Craft Corp (1994 Silver King Parent then Tracker Parent Co in 1995)
MIC = Silver King Boats (1994-2002 Mako Marine Parent Co)
MRK = Mako Marine (2002 Parent Co SeaCraft from Tracker)

CSY was known for building heavy puffers.

Nub question... What is a puffer?

csurf, Puffer = sailboat, please pardon the poetry of GFS, he comes from a family of accomplished artists:cool:. CSY Made some rock solid crusiers in the 35-45' class. They built big over-built tubs that sailed really well. Kicked ass and amazed the elite in a lot of long distance regattas down in Jimmy Buffet waters. Fret not if your rig is not a Potter - it's as stout as any 23' SC. If the seas were bad enough, I believe your knees and back would give out before that hull. Get to grinding, bro'.

Enjoy your new rig.

There has been talk on this site over the years that CSY built boats just as good if not better the Potters..... now get to work like Gil said and make that baby shine once again!

Hull minus the wood transom and some years the stringers with wood. are what make the hull worth redoing and customizing to your own taste. I have taken some Robalos and Makos apart from the 70s and the hulls are too weak, soft and full of water logged foam and wood from small failures in the marginal glass thickness. Oh and the rides are too rough. The potter or even the moseley sea craft hulls that had some wood in the stringers, Never had thin bottoms. Always more then enough glass. Sometimes a little sloppy but still enough there to rebuild. That is also why the Blunt bow ugly 233 formula was stretched and copied so much. Plenty of glass and a real deep V that never fractured made it worth so many other companies splashing the bottom and making it better then it was originally!!!! even tho the foundation or hull bottom started the same way as the sea craft. . A race boat hull.

CSY was next door to the dealer I worked for in tampa and built large sailing yachts for charter in the islands. They knew how to build boats and their stuff is as good as any, no worries

Thanks guys for offering up some reinsurance on the hull. I'll sand a little harder knowing the result will be more than worth the effort.

Still curious about how the dates work out between CSY and Sarasota? I'm sure it full of corporate filing red tape and bottom lines.

So my 1981 23 Sceptre was also made by CSY? Always thought it was a Seacraft Industries boat. Were there boats during this time period that may have been made or started by one company and finished by the other. My boat has the splashwell enclosure like earlier models but the deck is smooth without the stripes.
