Mid 80's 20
 

I have been looking at an 88 20 Seacraft. I'm curious as to why that vintage boat was rated for a 225 where as the older and newer ones were 175. Also, it just feels like a slightly larger boat than a potter.

Is it a bit different design?

The early '80s 20s were made by Seacraft Industries, the late '80s by Tracker. The 20 SFs are 8" longer than the Potter 20s at 20'-4", but I think the 20 MAs are the same as Potter's. These boats also have a 25" transom compared with 20" for the Potters, and a small lifting/spray strake at the entry of the bow like the Potter 18s and 23s.

My '83 20 doesn't have a Coast Guard placard on it, so I don't know what HP it's rated for. But I can tell you that at 200 HP it's not overpowered.

My `89 20 sf is rated for 235. The transom is thick @ 2 3/8". Probably for marketing rather than need. 235 will push that hull to low 60`s. The hp rating probably went down because of the heavy 4 strokes.
