Is this right
 

Hi, I'm Ron. New to the site, but not to SeaCrafts. I owned a 1985 18' before my current boat a 1983 23' sf. I have owned this boat for 19 years now and I love it, but... I recently struck a submerged pipe. The transom cap split. When we took it apart the rest of the way, we discovered there was 2 inches of filler on top of the wood core transom. The top two bolts on the motor went through the filler(cabosil) and it shattered. I was wondering if anyone else had encountered this problem.

I have never seen filler from a SeaCraft factory like yours. Since your not the original title owner, I would guess it was some sort of repair done by a previous owner :confused:

Maybe to raise a 20" transom? What do you other guys think, Trayder, Don, Strick.......,

Yeah!!! I agree Chuck, look at the gap where the curve is or was suposed to be....kinda sloppy!! I'm being generous with sloppy, actually looks like, you know....real ugly! I'm wondering if it was a cheap try at raising the transom??

The glass man that I have doing the repair and I both think something was going on here with some kind of repair, but it really looks like that was as far as the wood core went (note 2 inches of 1/2" thick glass). I should have taken some pictures of the glasswork on the stringers. There were places that the glass curled under and other places that the edges were sticking up. The way the transom looked was consistent with the rest of that area. I'm thinking that somebody was having a bad day at the factory. It's a good thing the boat was over built. Don't get me wrong, I still think its a great boat and plan on keeping it for a long time. Maybe someday I will rebuild it to look like some of the boats that I have seen here.

looks like some one made a mistake and cut a 23" transom in stead of 25 inch.. then tried to repair it with filler then capped it and called it good.. maybe when it was popped out of mold someone wrote 23 on the back and then a person cleaning up the hull cut the transome 23'' .. JUst saying...who really knows??!!

Here is the transom on my '80... It looks like they filled in the notch to accommodate a long shaft.

The transom was not even sealed at a few places at the bottom and on one side. The strange thing is, it was still solid. Its been repaired and I got it back today. Yea.

So did you ever figure out if it was a factory goof or a home repair job?

I couldn't get a definite answer on that. The transom area has been cleaned up now, but this is just a small example of the way the glass was laid in most of the area to the rear of the fuel tank by the stringers. I wouldn't think the stringers would need repair after only 10 years old(when I bought the boat).
