sea star or baystar
 

getting ready to buy a steering system for my 72 20' sf . using a 125 opti on a bracket . and wanted to know if the baystar or seastar is a better choice . or should i save a bunch of money and go cable steer.happy 4th of july.

I have cable steer on my 18 and no problems. Merc 150 2 stroke. In my work we use hydraulic on 95% of the boats. I have found the sea star helms last longer but these are commercial use 700 plus hours per year. Bay star may be fine if you are recreational especially with the 125. We have 150 through 250 Suzuki 4 strokes.

Both baystar and seastar hydraulic steering systems are made by Teleflex. The baystar system is made for outboards under 150 hp. The seastar system is designed for outboards greater than 150 hp. Both are excellent systems and in my humble opinion well worth the added expense.

go with bay star mine works fine no problem 3years now george

I've only had the Sea Star with a 225hp before. I'm putting No Feedback cable steering on my 20 for one reason mainly. I can let go of the wheel and it will generally hold course, not drift left or right. The downside to this is if I fall overboard solo offshore, by by boat!

Baystar will work great for your 125...

You should have a kill switch on and make sure it works... I had to install on on my boat. didnt trust the kids to turn the boat around and get me.. after all there only 4 and 5. And they would rather be fishing for fish then fishing for me... LOL

Are you talking about a wireless of some kind or a lanyard. It's kind of tough to rig trolling gear with a lanyard. I'd love to find some kind of wireless kill switch!

Take a look at the Autotether. I've never used it but it should be what you are looking for. BOE Marine has it much cheaper than if you buy straight from them.

I was going to get a bay star but the sea star allows you to steer your kicker, too. It doesnt seem the bay star offers this. The downside is the price. I find a no feedback helm on a 100 hp four stroke to be rather stiff. But I could have changed ratios.
