Deck painting questions
 

Plan on painting the deck of my Tsunami this fall. What kind of paint should I use? What kind of prep work is needed if any on the deck? Do i use a special roller? Any help is greatly appreciated

Has the deck been painted before? why are you painting it? Are you trying to freshen up the nonskid?

I recored the soft spots on my deck and then completely sanded down the diamond non-skid and painted it. I used Interlux Interdeck.

My first attempt I put it down just a little too thick and it ended up not curing until long after I started using it... I ended up sanding it back down and repainting it.

The 2nd attempt worked much better and so far I am fairly happy with it.

I use my boat primarily for spearfishing so a lot of gear gets slid around the deck and the result is I already have some scuffs and black marks and whatnot.

Whatever paint/coating you decide to go with will dictate the process and your application method.

I've used both Interlux and Petit epoxy. Both will peel after a few seasons but can be gone over easily enough. They also sell a non-skid additive which works great(keep stirred during application). Dont go over after applying non-skid. I also used on the topsides of gunnels. Very happy. Also be sure not to go over silicone on deck panel gaps if that's what you used.

that product,"interdeck" ,is a single part cheap crap paint - singe part paints never really cure - it is what it is,cheap low quality crap...

the smart way to refinish the deck is to ,sand it down,tape it out,use a good quality 2 part primer,and roll it out in awlgrip,sprinkle with grip tex and roll it again,then one more time...
this holds up,and looks great,compared to that cheap interdeck...

Ditto on the KiwiGrip and Interdeck comments. Interdeck is a terrible deck paint. KiwiGrip is great.

The inner deck on my recently refurbished Tsunami got a bad coat of some kind of paint, put there by someone that should have known what they were doing. It never seemed to fully cure, stained easily, and dissolved in strong cleaners. It drove me crazy to have a great looking boat with such an awful deck. So after reading what others in the forum had to say, I applied KiwiGrip. VERY easy to apply (relatively speaking) and looks fantastic - truly professional. It took 3-4 hours to clean, mask, and apply the finish. I like that it can be easily touched up - decks take a lot of abuse- and the degree of non-skid can be varied. Time will tell how it holds up, but I am very impressed thus far.
