Pink Coaming Pads?????
 

I've attached a photo of my coaming pads which have developed pink blotches. I'm told this is a type of mold from the inside. The guy who made them specifically made the bottom of the pad with mesh screen so the foam can drain and dry but still got the pink. I know of no cleaner that removes this pink color- so, does anybody else have experience with this happening to them? Is there a better grade of vinyl that this won't happen with? I've removed the foam and completely dried it but I can't seem to stop this.

Did sunscreen cause it, maybe??

I have seen several reports on iboats, whaler, and sea-ray sites. One fellow (microbiologist from UC Davis) claimed its a a Strep bacteria that likes the white vinyl. Doesn't sound like marine quality vinyl. I'd see if your upholstery guy or his supplier can make it right.

Another guy claimed oxy-10 acne remover killed/it cleaned it... otherwise put a couple of pink ribbons around there to show solidarity with the fight against breast cancer :p

A boat I used to work on used to grow it on the lid of the bait chiller in the cockpit. I would drape a commercial bleach soaked rag over it and maybe inside the combing but bleach is gonna be harsh on the vinyl as I'm sure you know and may have tried.

ive seen it several times. my understanding is that it is something that leaches out of certain production runs of whoever produces the vinyl. i know some canvas people that have had to eat it on a couple boats and redo all their work for free basically...

I have seen it more on seat cushions than vertical pieces. I always thought it was a reaction of the spray on sunscreens to the material as I never noticed it before the spray on stuff started. I did also hear it was something in the vinyl. I would love to hear the truth.

I am getting a reddish stain on my vinyl cushions and seat covers. Also thought it was sunscreen, as it is worse where sunscreen contact is worst. Nothing takes it out. Pretty sure its not mold. All this vinyl is pretty old, and there was none of this when I bought the boat. Vinyl on the last boat wasn't affected.

I used thebbest marine vinyl and ive got one osming bolsrr with a minor link slot problem it is a mold Mine was new wood new foam and vinyl so it wasnt fungus in thebold foam. I frmove the vinyl and spray the foam with bleach. Ive heard spray nine also will clean the vinyl.

This is a posible remedy ive heard from a fellow upholster i know

Ah, the dreaded pink mold.* It's a fungus for sure.* Tough part with new vinyl is getting an anti-fungal to the fungus since it's imbedded.* I've heard of success with black spot anti-fungal liquids they sell at the garden shop for roses and tomatoes.* I'd choose a brand with the highest concentration of active ingredients, saturate a thin white towel or t-shirt and lay it on the seat and leave it at least overnight.* I've heard this works, but haven't encountered the problem for several years so don't know if it really works.* Bleach applied in the same manner is also supposed to work, but bleach will weaken the thread.* After treating it may take a few days for the pink to disappear.*
