5" engine extension
 

Okay, so I got one off eBay for my 1990 merc 115. The way it looks to me is that I have to tear into my lower unit as the drive shaft is tapered and threaded . The directions don't say anything about having to take the guts out of the lower unit, but if I was looking at the exploded diagram right, I don't see any other option. Has anyone done this on a merc of this vintage or at all that could either confirm or reject my thoughts? Thanks

What directions are you reading?? All you have to do is swap the studs and put on the spacer then put on the extension pieces to extend the shift shaft, drive shaft, and water tube. Wicked simple! I've done 5 of these and run one myself.

Mine came with an entire new longer driveshaft. This is not from Bay but a merc kit.

This is not exactly what I have but close. The drive shaft is like 3' long. It's all at work so I can't show exactly what I have.

oh boy :) That's a big job . . . F'that. Can you send it back? Bay manufacturing kit is what you want. If you can't return it . . . you can buy individual pieces from Bay Manufacturing.

I'll probably look at getting the individual pieces than. I'll be in contact with you tomorrow when I bring the kit home and hopefully you can tell me what I need from bay. Thanks Tim

I installed the Bay kit on my Yam 250 2s. The hardest part was opening the housing for driveshaft adapter clearance. This may or may not be necessary. I "rigged" a holesaw with long 3.8' drive extension.

This is what I got Tim. Any idea on what parts I should get from bay??

Chance . . . you're in good shape. Looks like you just need a drive shaft extension and maybe a shift shaft extension. Can you take a picture of the top of your shift shaft on the motor now? and tell me if there is a small hole through either end of the one you got in the kit?

I don't have the lower unit off, so I can't really get a picture of the top of the shift shaft. But the new one has a hole on both ends. I does not go all the way through, just a little bit it looks like

I'd go old school and call Bay. They will know if the parts for your extension fit their extension. They may not. I'd just return it, or resell on ebay take the small loss and buy the Bay extension. Who needs an extra brand new drive shaft sitting around anyway.
