Splashwell hatch help !!!

the hatch in my splash well is not theere and has a piece pf starborad with wood blocks over it.. i want to replace this with a water tight hatch.. Is there any reason structurely i cant cut out most of it to install a 13x30 inch hatch.. the measurement is 13.75x38.5 and the cut out for the hatch is only 11.25x28.25... i see no reason why i cant i don't see and structural reason but i am uncertain.. it is a double latch resin style hatch.

the hatch i used was too large for my application but it is installed .... It goes into the transition and closes but not quite water tight but dos the job pretty well... i am going to change the gasket and this should fix the sealing issue for now... i also think i would opt for a adjustable latches ... the hatch i bought dont adjust or this would also take care of te issue .... th large hatch is great when accessing the bilge though !! i have a picture of the cut out but not after installation ... ill try to get one when i get home next week..
