tackle box install
 

Hey guys, I'm considering installing a built in tackle box in my 20' MA. Locations of consideration are 1) in the side of the center console or 2) on either side of the rear of the boat where the top mounted hatches are. I'm a little worried that if I cut a 11"x15" hold that close to the transom that it may jeopardize the structural integrity of the transom. That is however my preferred location for access. Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Cut it in the transom boxes and you will b fine. Nothing structural there in the boxes for the transom.

That's perfect. I wasn't sure if the top cap offered any structural support for the transom. I think I will enjoy that access point much more.

Nope. The cap and floor are not really glassed to transom. Cap is riveted or screwed and floor is just potter puttied to the stringers. Alittle potter putty back around the splash well and boxes to help glue them together.

Thanks for the info. I'm learning as I go. I also need to fill a few screw and drilled holes throughout the boat. Do you know if it recommended to fill the holes first with an epoxy or other product before filling with gel coat?

Depends what look ur going for. 5200 works good and u can somewhat smooth it out w acetone. Marinetex sells kits. There is west systems epoxy and get one of their filler putties and fill hole. But yes you will want to fill hole w something besides gelcoat.

Gelcoat doesn't stick well to epoxy, and I don't think it sticks at all to 5200.

For little holes, sometimes epoxy works ok if you grind after a full cure. I have good luck with Bondo which is polyester, like gelcoat. For screw holes. Not to fill giant holes.

Mix some of the gelcoat with enough talc to make your putty. Sand when set and polish.
