Will a quart be enough for the hull and perhaps two quarts of color for the rest?

Thanks

I was able to get 2 coats from the rub rail to the water line with one quart, the paint was thinned at 10%. I sanded in between coats and was happier with the results after 4 coats (2 quarts) I sanded to 320 before the final coat. I also thinned the paint at 15% on the last 2 coats. I would recommend 2 quarts for what I'm describing (between the rub rail & water line) all roll & tip.

Order your hull paint ,try it out and learn from there.

good luck, Bill

Thanks Bill, appreciate the info. Good idea too with the one section first. Hadn't thought of that. Never pained a boat before so it's a little intimidating.

Don't know what paint you're using, but you might want to check out Signature Finish, as it's made for DIY/roll & tip, so very user friendly. Very tough paint but easy to repair if you get nicks and dings in it. Owner Tom Fabula is very helpful, can mix up any color you want and will know how much paint you'll need. It's also the only urethane I know of that won't develop bubbles if used below the waterline. Check out my Bottom Painting Project thread; I used 3 coats and it turned out pretty good.

I went to your thread and saw your primer was pretty dark. That will probably dictate how much paint it's going to take. Looking at photo's and staring at it from 12'' make's a big difference. I still have not posted picture's of my bottom:rolleyes:  I ordered 1 kit (wasn't enough) I ended up using 2 quart kits (1 gal total material) of Interlux VC Performance Epoxy (4 coats). I only had to use a small white foam roller with no tipping necessary. It took both kits to where you could no longer see my primer (system 3 primer, a lighter grey than yours)

That's some nice stuff.

Thanks Denny, I'll look into the signature paint. I was thinking about the EMC that Shine sells, but haven't ordered anything yet.

Bill, the pics on my thread are with a high build primer. I plan on another coat of the awe grip 545 which is grey also but I don't think as dark. I'm leaning to a Kingston grey for the rub rail down to water line so we'll see.

Just painted the bottom of my sceptre 20 Kingston gray (interlux perfection) and used 3 quart kits to do from the keel to about 6" above the water line. Nice color that will not show bad if not clean. Im going to do the sides this weekend if it don't rain. I got a Carolina blue for the sides (4 quarts) but not sure if I am going to use it or go with something different. Think it will take 3 quarts but got 4 just incase but I am spraying also so there is a difference vs roll and tip. Just got the inside primed with 545 and will go with a white of some sort then redo all the original floor stripes with the Kingston grey.

Like Denny, Signature paint is worth a look. Used Kingston Grey from rail to waterline on a 23', three coats, bought 48 ounces but only used about 38. It goes on very thin. Nice hard finish and it looks as nice now as the day I did it about four years ago. Even had a rain shower an hour after doing my deck white. Didn't affect it. Another nice thing about it, the paint never skims over in the can. Just used some four year old Matterhorn white on the bottom of a small boat recently. Was like new.

FF and Cheg, do you guys have any recent pics you wouldn't mind sharing. Just picking the color scheme gives me a headache. My boat will be in the water so after barrier coat, the bottom will be black anti foul to the waterline, KingstonGrey for the hull up to the rub rail. Then either a light grey (whisper grey) or off white. I don't think I want anything but a white on the cockpit floor because of heat. Then again don't think I should get overly fancy.

Think I'll give Signature a call on Monday.
