pin holes in bottom paint
 

I had my bottom redone last year. It was to be soda blasted, epoxy barrier coated, and painted. I was crawling under the boat today and noticed lots of places where i saw these pin holes in the paint. What caused this, and how big a deal is it if I am trailering the boat. Is this sub-standard workmanship?

When the job was being done they said they liked to apply the bottom paint while the last coat of barrier epoxy was still tacky so the two layers would bond together. Could the not completely cured epoxy barrier coat have caused the pin holes in the paint?

You will have to sand into the bottom paint and barrier coat to determine the depth of those pinholes in the paint.

I suspect that you will find they correspond to pinholes in the hull that were not filled during the barrier coating process.

As long as the barrier coat and antifouling paint were of compatible chemistry, ( same manufacturer usually,) there is no reason to suspect problems at their interface. Your applicator was correct, applying the AFDP before the epoxy is fully cured does inprove the bondline quality.

That happens when you soda blast the bottom...no big deal. However I suspect that the painter thought the barrier coat and paint would fill them. The proper way would of been to use a pinhole filler, quick sand and then shoot it. JMHO
