225 Yamaha Four Stroke 23ft 87 Sceptre
 

Just came across pair of 225 Yamaha fours strokes going to re power my 87 with one of them.. Any other 23 Sceptre owners on here with 225 Yamaha four stroke.. Would like some input! No Bones Jr

They are good motors but it depends on the year. I had one on another boat only to find out the hp was substantially overstated due to the industries rating fudge factor. My 04 225 specs showed it only produced 207 hp and the only difference between the 200 vs the 225 was the sticker on the cowl.

Some had serious internal corrosion issues. Scope it before you commit.

Ken and Jr., for sure do as the "cool" man says, have the exhaust scoped. Seemed to be an issue around 2004 and on. Not positive of the years spanned. It's an expensive fix. And 'da Moose is right on the HP issue, my brothers 200 HO etecs run circles around the 225 Yamahas they replaced. However Jr. will like his GPH and MPG a lot better than the old Merc EFI. Mostly 04-06. As said not an easy or cheap fix. You know the rest.

As most of you know Lil' Kenny is in the yacht mangement business..
Customer basically gave him both 2005 Yam's with just 300 hours
on them...:eek: They came off a 28 Grady.

The head Yamaha Tech at the local marina says the repair "kit"
IE: oil pan, exhaust, muffler, etc. that cost is around $450..
We got them to area 442 last night, building stands today.

Going to put the camera up exhaust chutes and see what is up!....

He is a lucky sucker...

Ken-Good talking to you this AM. I am ready to buy that other one. Kenny may need to head to Vegas with that luck! The scope will tell the story....

Kenny, Moose is right . . . the f225 is a pretty weak "225", more like a 200 hp over most of its upper rpm range, so won't have near the omph you're used to with a 2-stroke! (See attached torque/HP curves.) Prop selection will be critical if you're planning to run very heavy. I think the f250, which adds variable cam timing to what I believe is the same basic block, is a much stronger motor. Don't know how hard it would be to add that to a 225, but it might be a useful upgrade.

Sure can't argue with the price however, and I'm sure you'll burn a lot less gas with that motor! Denny

Looking at hp chart both are liars.... One is overstating and the other is understating. If both were limited to 225 hp the Etec would look far less impressive on the chart. They all play the same game but BRP was smart enough to hedge their bet by stickering a 250 as a 225 instead of the other way around.
