Deer Down!

Well Saturday morning I woke up early and my boy was trying to talk me into sitting in the woods. I wasn't planning on going but glad he talked me into it. I didn't think that I would see anything due to a bear tore up the area around the stand that night according to my trail cam and the mess he made. Bear season didn't start till today so I told him maybe we will just sit for a short time and see what happens. I made sure he knew that we couldn't shoot a bear until Monday. Well I decided to mess around on the grunt call while sitting in the box stand just to see what may happen. It was getting about that time when the deer will respond to these type of things due to the does going into heat. After messing around making a bunch of noise on the grunt call this big boy (Big for our area) came straight in and was looking for one thing. Shot twice with the rife at about 50-60 yards and missed twice and he dint act like he even heard the gun shoot. He keep coming right at us so I grabbed my shot gun and waited for him to get closer. Once he got close I laid him down with double O buck shot at about 10-15 yards from us. Not a huge deer by national standards but a very nice deer for our area.

I don't want to give a false impression that I am an awesome hunter but I have had the best luck this year. I have been blessed to get the opportunity to take some nice deer this year. I have hunted for 12 years now and this is the only year I have ever shot two nice bucks in the same year.

This second one of the season was shot on Wednesday before thanksgiving at about 5pm during the sunset late evening. The deer came to me responding to a Grunt call that I had been blowing on a few times and stopped 10 yards in front of me. Took him with the 12 gauge just as I did the first one.

All the work in the past years has finally paid off this year!

Few PIC's:

Nice deer but how did you miss with a rifle at 50-60 yards? Maybe Santa will bring you a new scope. Just kidding of course. Strong work. Now go get that bear!

The rifle that I was using was my sons. He was there with me and too shook up to take a shot at him and passed the gun to me. He has been carrying it into the woods all year and we have a ways to walk to get to the stand. We go threw thick woods so he beats it into everything. It is defiantly time to so some target practice and dial it back in.

After 2 down I'm making the boy take a shot at the next one. He is a better shot than me. Just gotta get is nerves under control. I'm going to set up my fake deer and let him shoot from the stand this weekend so he is more confident.
