The operator of the boat hit the jetty at cruising speed, having missed the turn in the channel just 75 yards away from the jetty. The depth almost all the way across the inlet to the west jetty is 7-12'. The channel in the inlet is 12-30' deep. Once through the bridge or out of Destin Harbor, a 28' powerboat can just head straight for the flashing green light at the west side of the inlet mouth, with no fear of hitting a jetty or running ground.
The yellow line is the approximate course the ill-fated boat actually steered, while the white line is the safe course in the channel.

Dang Padre' don't give out the way points for Crab Island or Donny V will be there Sunday anchored up, with his binoculars, huntin' fer an itsy bitsy, teany whiny, yeller polka dot ..........you know.

Actually Terry I prefer an itsy bitsy, teany whiny, T-back!!! Color is not an issue!! However when I was fishing years ago in East Cape, Baja this rather attractive young lady came up to the bar in a T-back with the strings made with monofilament versus cloth, very impressive, very!!! I think it was 50# test fluorocarbon, I looked real hard to confirm, plus she upped it a notch and used crimped Sampo snap swivels.....I thought that was a nice touch!! :)

Yea pretty sad stuff. Here in Callaway a man died from drowning after his boat was taking on water just last week... I don't understand why people don't stay with the vessel and try to swim to shore...that is with this case in mind...
