Hi Florida guys- can anyone identify this fish in the photo? It has large heavy scales and unusual mouth- never saw one before and no one around here can i.d. it- thanks

Looks like a mojarra we use them for bait to catch snook!

Florida Fish ID

Ok, well then I might just have to apologize to a guy down here- he thought it was something called a Yellowfin Mojarra- and I thought he was wrong after I looked it up and the photos I saw looked nothing like my photo. But if you also think it's a Mojarra then it probably is.

All I have known them to be is mojarra, but it does have yellow fins. So there you go.

Pinfish

I think striped majara excellent for snook

McGillicuddy 02-11-2017 02:12 PM

Definitely a mojarra. 54 species within 8 Genus. Actual pinfish is a porgy, a different family of breams and porgy. Only one genus of pinfish (Langdon). Some south Florida guys will tell you when the snook snub the pinfish, the mojarra is the difference in getting the bite.

Here's a list of the Mojarras of the world (by the way, they are quite tasty, I've eaten different species in Mexico, Portugal and Spain):

While most can be identified by location, differences in some species are so subtle that their differentiation may be microsopic (sorry the ichthyologist in me is sneaking out).

I was thinking about something like this. http://www.wideopenspaces.com/fishve...ing-a-picture/ Wonder how well it works.
Might have to check phone all the time, just in case there is an "emergency closure" or something.

(thread probably should have been put in fishing section)

Damn Gilly what the hell is that? Sounds really bad, is there a cure for it? Contagious? I bet it's worse than gout. :)

No cure.
Contagious.

Affects many.

The study of fish continues.

Mojarra aka Sandperch...great snook bait but some people go elbow to elbow on the seawalls to fish for them for eats, pretty humorous..
