Rod holder brace
 

I am installing 0 degree rod holders for giant tuna fishing. I need to reinforce the bottom of the rod holder with a brace.

Some guys thru bolt them with finishing washer on the outside of the haul. Not my favorite option. I have seen where guys glass in a pad and wood screw the brace to the pad. A few years ago I sprayed Awl Griped in the cockpit and not sure how I would make that look good.

So I was wondering if I took the rub rail off and unscrewed a few feet of the cap from the haul if I could get a piece of starboard down there to wood screw the brace to.

Any input would be appreciated.

I used 1/4" aluminum under the cap on my 23'. Mine are not for BF and not sure what boat you have.

I have a 1972 23ft Sceptre. I put a 1/2 aluminum plate under the cap 6 inches fore and aft of the rod holders.

That ought to do it!!!! :)

I reinforced the gunnels with the rod holder tying the rack in with the gunnel takes a lil patience to fit it but it helps BF proof? Sorry about the sideway pictures

Installed these on our 1998 23cc. The bottoms are fastened in with a stainless steel electrical conduit strap around some neoprene padding. We used screws with the biggest possible thread, with some 4200. Only drilled into liner. These are angled swivels, you need them here b/c contour of gunnel. There is also a backing plate under the cap.

Biggest test was a 500lber taking a down rod right under the boat ~30lbs.

~30 lbs of drag. We don't fight out of these just set baits and then move after initial chaos.

Very Primitive, but, what if you installed 4 small angle braces on each side of the rodholder into the cap?

R&R Fisheries in Ipswich, Mass. sells a stainless steel swivel rod holder support. Depending on how far away your liner is, you may have to shim it with coosa, G10, etc.
