Awlgrip Quantities
 

so this past weekend i primed my 23 DF with Awlgrip 545 epoxy primer. I must have got the quantity wrong from the coverage calc because 1 gal of base and 1 gal of spray converter barely got 2 coats on with a conventional sprayer with pressure pot 1.5mm tip. How much primer has it taken you guys that have sprayed 23's and will i need more than 1 gal of awlcraft/2qts converter?

Unless you’re set on spraying - I’d look into roll & tip. Paint goes much further and not as much taping. Finish comes out just as nice. Just my $.02. I used Awlgrip and it works fine.

The transfer efficiency (percentage of paint that gets on the part) for HVLP is 50-65%. Standard gun is ~40%. The rest is lost to fallout or drift.
Roll & tip is 100%.

You should be reducing it too, lays it down nicer and you end up with more product. They say 10-25% but i typically go 33%, and even more if im spraying hi build. 2 gallons doesnt sound that far off if youre doing the bottom and hullsides?

it was not recommended to Roll/Tip 545 Primer and the recoat times were far too long to work for me. I have access to a paint booth during off hours but need to vacate before business operations so sometimes i only have long enough to spray after close of business, cure overnight (with accelerator), and vacate. I have some pinholes to fill anyway so i just bit the bullet, sanded, filled, and got 2 more gallons of primer base and 2 gallons of converter. i should have some leftovers for my console and leaning post but at least i wont run short...

also im using awlcraft 2000 for topcoat which is spray only.

So i decided to re shoot the primer with an HVLP gun with a 1.4mm tip this time and was able to lay down 3 full coats on the topsides (from chine up) all the way around including transom with 1 gallon of base and another gallon of converter then reduced 10%. I thought the pressure pot would have been easier because of the extra capacity but the HVLP was much easier for me to get a good even finish and was more efficient with material.

Interesting, I never realized so much was lost with a HVLP gun. No wonder the down draft booths do so well.

I rolled my Hull with 4 coats on one quart.. using 2:1:1 ratio of paint to brushing reducer to converter.. it becomes the consistency of water, smells like a potent winded, and you have the foam roller barely wet. Lays down like glass using the regular Awlgrip
