Gary Ballough is a 14-time world champion and 13-time national champion in offshore racing, and the throttle man from Boca Raton, Florida, won all those titles in outboard-powered boats.

“Propeller, motor height and setback are everything,” he says. “You can make your boat pretty much do what you want if those three things are right.”

Very good article that centers on the biggest performance killers on any boat. #2 (trim) is a big one that creates lots of havoc and is often left unaddressed. Every height, setback and prop adjustment needs to occur with the driveline being perfectly parallel to the keel of the boat. It's also important to make changes with a real world load on board.
