Starter wont engage

I have a 1994 Evinrude 150 intruder that's in great shape and has 260 hours on it.

Was trying to get it started last week and the starter would spin but not engage. I reached the starter today but same result. Had battery checked on it's good. The battery is under the console so the battery cable has a so so run to the engine. I cleaned the connection at the starter but not at the battery. It was so damm hot I could not get to it..

What else should I look for?

I think starter gear is stuck on the shaft - it is supposed to lift up to and engage the flywheel when the starter spins. A spring then pushes it back down to disengage from the flywheel when the starter is de-energized. Lube the gear n shaft up and make sure the gear moves freely. Can't remember if the shaft has a spiral or straight cut on it for the gear - just look closely. You may have to pull the starter to do it, but it's not a big deal.

It's a brand new starter but I'm going to work back from the starter to the battery

hmmm - sometimes there is a lift solenoid that lifts the gear to the flywheel - if that doesn't have good connections it will give the symptoms you describe.

Instead of me fooling around with it the mechanic will look at it and get it running, he needs to a bunch of things that I would take a month to figure out.

If the Bendix drive is not stuck, (hold nut on top with left hand than turn gear with right hand) and the gear moves up freely ,drive is good !
When you go to start and can see the Bendix drive spinning but not engaging, your polarity is reversed.... Motor running in reverse (brush plate wired incorrectly) Good luck !
