Re: Transom

I'm going to defer to the response to your question from Hermco. He's had significantly more experience at this than I, and I'm sure that if he knew it wouldn't work, he wouldn't be telling you...

Re: Transom

Not everyone will agree with the method, but if you're careful, it worked for me, when I left approx 3-4" outer skin lip. Probably helped that I was using one of those low HP cheapie electrics that...

Re: Yet Another Transom Job in the Works - ?ions

FJ,
What dimension (HxWxL) tank(s) do you need, and/or will fit your project? :)

Re: Towing Questions

Capt Brad,
Those calipers appear to be machined from billet stock, as opposed to what most of us are used to seeing made as a casting (sand or die).

Must be a fairly low volume production, to be...

Re: Coosa

Scott,
Here's a link for plywood design spec's, which should give you all the info you could want for comparison. I had the Comparison stuff saved on my old PC, until it died

Best of my...

Re: Coosa

Scott,
I used coosa 20 for my wet/rotted transom replacement. From the data I received from the folks @ coosa composites (see link), it has same or better strength as marine ply, at about 1/2 the...

Re: Yet Another Transom Job in the Works - ?ions

FJ,
I had forgotten about the staples :o While most of the ones I hit were rather rusted, there were quite a few which were solid as well. They obviously don't help with keeping acceptable...

Re: Yet Another Transom Job in the Works - ?ions

FJ,
Did you get all the wood out yet? I had to sharpen the electric chain saw a couple times, because the resin in the plywood, and scraping along on the fiberglass had a tendency to dull it over...

Re: Yet Another Transom Job in the Works - ?ions

FJ,
Thin as the inner skin is, I believe it's important to get a good bond to the core.

I made a core template then dry fitted each core piece, then bonded the layers of core material together,...

Re: Yet Another Transom Job in the Works - ?ions

FJ,
I did a nearly identical transom rebuild one yr ago, cutting the outer skin, similar to what you've started. I used 3/4" Coosa for the core, but the style of rebuild was pretty much what...

Re: Knocking Down Orange Peel

dink,
I too am sorry the wetsanding with 400, followed by lots of elbow grease with rubbing/polishing compound is more work than you had hoped for.

I'm the "know-nothing" that Trayder is...

Re: Knocking Down Orange Peel

Trayder,
Obviously I do not have a sufficient knowledge base of the folks on this site to be assuming there may be lurking a neophyte or two amongst those posting questions requesting...

Re: Knocking Down Orange Peel

Trayder,
The only problem I have with recommending use of power sander to a neophyte, is the likelyhood that they will do more damage than good is pretty high... While it will take longer to do...

Re: Knocking Down Orange Peel

Knocking down the orange peel should NOT involve ingesting ANY dust. Simply get youself a bucket of water, some 400 (or finer) Wet-R-Dry sandpaper, and a 6" rubber sanding block, for the initial...

Can't speak for others experiences, but IMHO, the reputation on those black max's is pretty fair. Don't believe I'd let the year be as much a detering factor as the condition, (appearance,...

Wart,
Do I smell a color change coming for some of the X-Sharks "Accessories"?

Re: CG Regulations - max HP

JWB...
The Coast Guard & the NMMA are NOT interested in the HP alone, but instead are focussed on the weight that needs to be supported, should a vessel become swamped.

What they are trying to...
