Along with Ed Mancini and Trayder, I had the privilege of experiencing this very phenomenon in person courtesy of Other Tom. As we neared warp speed, all of a sudden the rods were there in the t-top, and then there was a flutter of vapor, and they were gone as we broke through the sound barrier!
