Default Re: Why did I buy this stuff ???

Fellow-ship I think your right…..

Ed …Welcome to CSC …. Sorry I had to do that !!!! Where ya been hiding !!!! Glad to see ya back !
Oh yeah… Iso resin …good choice for Flip Flop repair

DH …. How are you !!!! glad to see ya ….

Anyhow ….Called the Fiberglass gurus and here’s what they told me ….after a good chuckle about my question and my memory loss…

Iso : Like Ed said a grade above plain old poly ….and preferred over poly for underwater situations or wet locations …more impervious to water ….good choice for tooling and mold work.
So as I eluded to above, that was headed for some layup in the bilge.

Vinylester : Also good for water contact and what a lot of builders are claiming to use today (all of our boats are more than likely Polyresin….unless it’s a new one)…

The plus with Vinylester resin is its strength …. Forms a very stiff laminate…that plus the water and chemical resistance properties makes it a good choice …which is what was used to re-core the decks . Also bonds very well to poly laminates. The down side is the cost …. Cost was about $14/gallon more than the Iso . The vinylester has been the predominantly used resin on the boat.

GelCoat : That was OK …..Temperature didn’t affect the couple of cans I had …. They didn’t feel it would …. If it had wax already in the mix …probably a different story …and Don that’s where I’m headed … to make a test batch

Wax add. : They were right again …. Solid block of rubber!!!! Trash …. I asked if I could get it back into solution (warm water bath etc.) said Not a chance …
Don ....It dosent look like it will ever go back into solution so I got to find a fresh can of that ....dont think West Marine will have that on their shelf !!!

Whew …..Thanks everyone !! And after all this ...The final kicker ... Still a little too cold up here anyhow
