My 18 footer had a 5" board to keep water out of boat when I bought it. I think it was a very serious flaw but it didn't bother me because I have done a lot of fiberglass work on my previous boats to save money.
I had some plywood Nidacore left over from another boat project. Nida core is light and will not rot like balsa. It is also very strong. I cut pieces just like wood and used fast set epoxy to glue together. I then filled with epoxy mixture to get curves right. I then covered with the no itch cloth sold by Defender industries the streches very well. The last part is the most time consuming. fill and sand, fill and sand. boat is in Groton, CT.
