Default Re: 23 inboard restoration complete

hey rip- im surprised to hear it has a 1-1 tranny in her. most that i have seen or know about have a 1.51-1. It shouldnt be real hard to modify yours, I did my old mako back in the eighties that had the same set-up (1-1, right hand 13/13 wheel.) and replaced it with a 1.5-1 so I could also turn a bigger wheel. Keep in mind you will go from a right hand wheel (if your motor is standard rotation) to a left hand wheel with the extra gear). Wheel size is subject to debate here but the original on some of our boats (mine is a 78'- was 16/17. The process to change to the largertranny basically consisted of shortening the shaft and having it re-keyed( dont remember but on the other boat is was around 6 inches, i measured about 20 times before I had it cut ) to compensate for the extra gear in the transmission. I also replaced my motor mounts before moving the whole motor forward prior to realigning the shaft coupling where it mates to the transmission coupling. a couple other things to think about would be replacing your cutless bearing while your shaft is removed and also repacking your stuffing box. -(easy stuff)anyways- all thats neither here nor there as again you have one beautiful boat!!! craig
