My old flats boat with a 70 Johnson did the same thing.
It came down to the oil. TCW3 is todays standard.
A friend (I know that is hard to believe that I have one)
did an oil test with all the major brands. Mercury TCW3
was the best, it had more of the crucial properties than
any of the others. When I changed brands the problem went away. I use Mercury oil in my Johnson, Mercury, weed wacker and blower. I will scan the results and post them for all of the oils that he did.
