Noah - do you have any bare metal showing, which would need priming, or are you just painting over existing paint ?

If bare metal, you will need to clean off any corrosion - try a scotch brite pad, then prime with zinc chromate, then paint.

If just repainting over the old paint, use the scotchbrite pad to roughen and clean the surface, and you should be able to paint right over it, without priming.

I did my motor's lower end this fall, scotchbrite, prime, paint, looks like new.
