I know how many pounds on the back of a boat can be a real Subjective personal opinion and can cause some to say no and others to say ok. For me, I consider a few factors in these type of questions.
Application of the boat- are you just trolling or running the boat when you are out? Or are you drift fishing in lets say 3-5 or 4-6 footers? Like 2 weeks ago with 3 guys and a full tank.
Transom height- lets face it 5” difference from 25 to 30” transoms height does make a difference.
Amount of people, fuel, stuff you are carrying around with you, distribution of weight, and is everyone standing around the transom fishing, do you have 30 something gallons of water in the live well, scupper design etc.
We must remember as soon as the heaver motors came on the market boats became wider to accommodate the extra weight.
Back in the 70’s when these boats were built gas was cheep and motors were NOT as dependable. Plus if you got in trouble on the water you were pretty much on your own not as much of a safety blanket as how it is now a days. The general consensus Then was two motors was more of a Safety issue than anything else. For me, one motor on the 30” transom OR two light motors (for range) on a bracket is the way to go. Again I live in South Florida and every month someone dies down here because they miss calculated the risk factor and paid the price.
