The front casting deck is cored on the original with balsa i believe as is the rest of the deck. Good construction unless water intrusion rears its ugly face at which point the balsa is a sponge and sucks up the water only to deteriorate. I can recommend raising the deck height a few inches so that you dont have a "soup bowl" deck where the water comes in when a fat guy stands in the corner. I did one deck in a 20' seacraft and cut the deck out about 2" away from the edge of the liner walls leaving a small lip to fashion the new deck upon. We raised about 1.5" and it made a big difference in keeping the water at bay. Overall the deck is a pretty easy job in that particular boat as long as the original foam filled stringers are not falling in on themselves. Good luck.
