Between the motor splashback, trim tabs and vertical risers, it can be tough to find nice clean water on the transom. A transducer left loose in my bilge worked very well (unless it tipped sideways). I needed to have temp too and wanted something a bit more professional and ended up with the tilted element through hull. It's alsmost flush with the hull bottom and reads at all speeds.
