If the surface you are going to paint on is flawless no pinholes, no excessive oxidation, no cracks just clean discolored gelcoat even if it has scratches you can fill the scratches and paint over without priming, but you still will need three coats of paint just like painting over primer. The pourpose of the primer is just not for the paint to stick to hull it also provides a built up uniform surface that actualy helps bring out the inperfections in the hull, I use Awlgrip almost on a daily basis,and I always primer any surface first, but if your on a tight budget it can be done.
