When I positioned mine I only considered it as a leaning post. Come to find out, you can stay seated most of the time while driveing a SeaCraft. Now I wish I was a little closer to the console. As for measurments at its closest point, the steeringwheel ring is level with top of the post seat and 14" away. Tilt steering would probably give you more options.
