Not sure why both batts went down I'll leave that to the smarter guys - with set up you have- try moving the switches so they point towards the lower part of the bidge and put some sort of a cage over them as mentioned. By cage, it could be anything that will work even something like an upside down tupperware with slots, just something to keep the crap out. Tough being so far and not being able to check it except every week.
