i have rectangular aluminum backing plates that i fabed for my top that mount under the gunnels 1/2" thick not positive on the dimensions on them but i want to say they are 8" by 4" (or however wide the gunnel is), ill get some pictures of them one of these days, anyways, i wouldnt use anything but aluminum

i bought a slab of 1/2" aluminum that was 4" wide (forget how long, but long enought for 6 backing plates) it em with the chop saw, marked the holes and over to the drill press, took me a good day to do all 8 but totally worth it, and throw some locktite on the bolts when you put the nuts on
