pardon my typing i just had shoulder surgery and am out of it and hurting like hell they removed half inch of collarbone and fixed torn labrum and rotator ,, any how I see how fish act and it is amazing . Red grouper storm in like wolf packs on dead bnait and then sit there with it in there mouths chewing gently with their front teeth, usualy the angler tugs and the bait pops out.or if they chew long enough to feel the hook or only the head is left they will let that slide out.
Gags etc will grab it and gently swim away a safe dist from other fish. Live bait is more effective in that they have to grab and swallow. Dead / cut bait they chew a lil while and that is those hits that always feel like you almost had em. With dead bait, If u can set the hook on the initial tug your chances are better. Its crazy how funny a sinker looks suspended 2' above the bottom. Thius why I like to use about 36" of 40lb fluoro, and a really sharp hook. I hope this sheds some kind of light on what I have seen.
Hear the rotator is not pleasant.
I`ve been using pink flouro for the same reason I use pink line. First color to disappear. I like the gold offset circle hooks from mustad.
I`ll try to make this easy on your shoulder.
1 snapper and grouper pick up livies and run. Y/N
2 yt mutton and red tap tap tap {chew?} dead Y/N

I love to setup behind the driftboat with livies with lots of chum. They give them the free bird seed to bring em up , and then they can`t resist the livies.
Doing this tomorrow.
