Yeah, welcome to LI. The coastline of LI is awesome, w/ great Bays and coves everywhere.

The northshore of the Island is very hilly and rocky w/ some of the nicest natural harbors you'll ever see. The Sound, separating LI from Connecticut is fairly deep and is home to some great fishing ( I'm a Southshore person, so I don't know it as well )

The southshore is very flat and very beachy, with barrier beaches along most of the Southshore that protects the mainland - in between these barrier islands, most of which are less than 1000' wide, and the mainland are different bays ( the inlets that connect these bays and The Ocean are where some great fishing is done.

The West of LI is very congested with people but the fishing is still excellent. As you move East, there is more wiggle room and I feel it gets more and more beautiful. There are great tackleshops and fishing areas throughout the island;

- Long Beach - party boat fleet
- Freeport - big fishing center
- Babylon - Augies bait and tackle
- Captree (fishes Fire Island Inlet area) - BIG party boat fleet
- Bayshore - tackle shops & big Bay to fish out of
- Huntington - very salty town
- Northport - Terminal Tackle - good place (sell in bulk)
- Hamptons - there are two very good inlets - Shinnecock and Moriches
- Orient Point - some of the best fishing in LI
- Montauk Point - " " " " " " " The Saltiest place on LI

I'm sure there are other places, this a broad stroke.

Some helpful hints - plan your days traveling on LI with rush hours - they are terrible. There are too many people here - and not enough road. This place was a better place to live 25 years ago - Urban Crawl has ruined the 'way it was' to the 'way it is'... ' se la vie '...

That's why the water is the place to be - get away from it all. As mentioned by someone else, you can find some beautiful nature all around. Nice people too, along with A-holes - just like anywhere...
