I always put a fuse about a foot from the battery or battery switch. That way, down the line, if the wire shorts, the main fuse will blow before your boat (or car) burns

I'm not trying to be funny this time but depending on how long your wire is, there could be lots of places where it could crack or wear and ground out where you cant see it. If your main fuse or breaker is beyond that point, it will blow but the wire will still be live to that point...The fuse next to the battery gives me peace of mind.
