Usually the trim snaps in verses being slid into place. It flexes along the center line allowing the outer edges to be pinched enough so it will seat properly in the base section of the molded rubrail. You shouldn't need soap, but it won't hurt anything and if you gain some advantage by putting it along the edges, so be it!
