I had to do a little buildup to 1/4" in 2 places on my transom cap, and within about a year, I had small cracks appear. I would suggest not going much thicker than 1/8" with the fairing compound. As mentioned above, I used plastic applicators to apply, an air file to quick cut, and a fairing board to shape. Other than 2 small cracks, it came out good, and still looks good.
